Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is making an Amateur Radio contact between Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi KI5VTV on the ISS and students at the West Michigan Aviation Academy (WMAA) in Grand Rapids, MI at 2:20PM EDT on Thursday, April 20, 2023.

LARC VP and ARISS Mentor Gordon Scannell KD8COJ is assisting with this event, the 12th ARISS event he has worked on.

On the Gerald R. Ford International Airport grounds, WMAA is a tuition-free public charter high school, STEM-focused and specializing in aviation and engineering programs for grades 9 through 12.  Part of the school’s curriculum includes a pathway to earn a private pilot license as well as qualifying to take the FAA license test after completing the school’s Unmanned Aerial Systems (drone) courses.  Other studies include space exploration, radio communications, and a year-long aerospace engineering course.  Members of the Lowell Amateur Radio Club have been supporting this ARISS contact by helping with the radio equipment setup, hands-on amateur radio satellite contacts, and a ham licensing event.

This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions of Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, amateur radio call sign KI5VTV. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station.
