LARC’s W8F Special Event operating activity is underway!
Every November, LARC, along with the Detroit Historical Society and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, commemorates, with an amateur radio Special Event, the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, on
November 10, 1975, 50 years ago.
From November 2 – Nov 15, LARC members are encouraged to take part in this club event. Get on HF (in your licensed band segments!) and sign as W8F. Use SSB, CW, FT8, SSTV. Keep a separate log, and after Nov. 15, submit .ADIF copy of your W8F QSO log to N8MR so you and our QSO partners can receive a confirmation certificate. An operating guide and helpful QSO “Script” are here on the website.
Please “spot” your frequency and mode on one of the many DX spotting sites, to let others, as well as fellow LARC ops, know you’re on the air.
Midway through this Special Event period, on Saturday November 8, from 11AM to 3:30 PM, our club will put W8F on the air from the Dossin Great Lakes Museum at Belle Isle State Park. We will need help with antenna raising, and with on-air operations on HF bands, so please join us on the Island!
Since Belle Isle is a state of Michigan park, our W8F operation will also be a POTA (Parks on the Air) activation. # US-1487. If you’re on-site, we’ll give you instruction how to do a POTA QSO.
Watch for updates here on the LARC website and the Livonia ARC Group on Facebook.
For another description of the event, view the W8F Page on QRZ.com
Help us promote this event among the amateur radio community. Tell your ham friends and post on your social media!
